General Mayan Strategy

Maya is a very easy civ to master, as they have no rivals (at least in the beginning), usually no barbarians and by the time they do have rivals, they should be able to deal with them.

When you spawn, take a very good look at your spawn area. Look for a place with lots of science, preferably coastal. The Mayans always spawn near a source of stone, so keep an eye out for that.

Once you've picked out the spot for your first city, settle as soon as possible. Losing one turn because there is a better spot 1 or 2 turns away could cost you your victory. When you have your city, you have to research these techs IN THIS ORDER:

Sailing -> Math -> Calendar -> Code of Laws -> Bronze Working

Make sure and have your city emphasizing science, as you will be needing every bit of science you can get.

With your second settler (if you have one), find another spot with lots of science. Not too close to your capitol, and preferably next to the aforemetioned stone resource.

Now that you have your cities and are researching away, go exploring! As The Mayans, you should have an entire continent or two to yourself. Meaning that there is an entire continent (or two) worth of goody huts waiting to be claimed!

Do not stop population growth intentionally for any reason before you have Code of Laws. Since you picked out good spots for your cities you should be able to get calendar within the time limit. Then comes the difficult part: building The Temple of Kukulkan.

Once you have Calendar you should research Code of Laws because that is what you need to build The Temple. The second Code of Laws is done, start building The Temple in your most productive city. After a little while, bronze working should be done. Then your workers must immediately stop whatever they are doing and CHOP CHOP CHOP!

Chop all the forests that you can to help The Temple finish. Once it is done, you are pretty much free to do as you please.

Some tips:

Try and get Gunpowder before the Europeans/Asians show up. Preferably before the Aztecs show up (although this is next to impossible).

You can build more cities if you like, but keep them well fortified. That end year will come very quickly if you are a good diplomat and stay out of wars.

Let the Europeans/Asians colonize around you. That will stem the neverending tide of Dog Soldiers and Jaguars.

I hope this has been helpful.
